The Kagera Link

Relationship, learning, sharing, prayer – these are just some of the joys that the Anglican church offers us all with its network of companionship links around the world. We believe that together we can be more fruitful as followers of Jesus.

"When we pray for each other and offer mutual support from the varieties of gifts and provision that God gives us, we can grow in faith and understanding. I am grateful for this gift of friendship with our brothers and sisters in Biharamulo, Kagera, and Lweru.” Bishop Joanne.

Our Diocese has been linked with the Diocese of Kagera in north-west Tanzania since 1994. Kagera is a beautiful and remote region, where many people are subsistence farmers living on less than £1.50 a day. In recent years, unpredictable rainfall has caused crop failures and food shortages.

Despite these challenges, the church in Kagera has grown rapidly. This growth led to the formation of two new dioceses: Lweru (2006) and Biharamulo (2017). In 2024, bishops from the four dioceses signed a Memorandum of Understanding, formally affirming the companion link between all four dioceses.

Through this partnership, we commit to praying, learning and serving together in God’s mission. Key areas of shared work include:

  • supporting sustainable farming and good agricultural practice
  • training evangelists and clergy
  • resourcing pastors for parish ministry
  • supporting healthy communities

“Our Dioceses have been enjoying this partnership with a lot of experiences through friendship, understanding, praying, learning and sharing. We hope that God will continue to make our people from both dioceses to enjoy and celebrate all blessings that come as the result of us being together in the mission of God.” Bishop Darlington of Kagera
