Safeguarding training

The Diocesan Safeguarding Training Team, are here to help you undertake the training that is required for the role you hold at church.  We want to create and enhance a culture where Safeguarding is an integral part of normal church life.  Therefore, training is available to anyone and everyone from a member of the congregation to a Bishop.  For some church roles, specific training is required.

Links to connect you to online training modules, face-to-face training sessions, plus information on who needs to complete which modules can all be found in the table below. For the complete Diocesan Safeguarding Training Strategy, please click here.

When to do training

All training should be completed before you start your role in church.  Once you have completed the training to the level required for your role, the highest core level needs to be refreshed every three years.

For Example, A PCC member starting in April 2021 will have been asked to complete Basic Awareness and Foundation training.  When they come to renew their training in April 2024, they will be required to complete the Foundation course.  Specialist modules such as Safer Recruitment and People Management or Raising Awareness of Domestic Abuse should also be refreshed at this time.

Where does my training fit with National Guidelines?

Experience and training through other organisations is respected and valued by the Church however we ask you to use that knowledge to complement The Church Of England Safeguarding Training. Therefore, regardless of previous training experience we ask all members to complete Safeguarding training.

In April 2021, the National Safeguarding Team issued a new Learning and Development policy.  The policy reviewed and defined the level of training which people (whether paid, voluntary, licensed or Lay) must complete to fulfil the safeguarding requirements for their role.

The jigsaw graphic below gives an overview of the courses that make up the training from the National Team.  Most delivered by the National Team are via the online portal however your diocesan team has developed many modules for face-to-face delivery.  Details of these courses, and how to book onto them can be found in the table above.
