Bildeston with Wattisham started up coffee mornings alongside their foodbank. In June 2026 the project will have been running for 12 months with monthly coffee mornings.
Hosting these coffee mornings has increased attendance and engagement from local residents and nearby villages. It has strengthened awareness and usage of the Bildeston Foodbank and provides a non-judgemental environment where individuals can seek support and encourages volunteer involvement.
It offered light refreshments free of charge and welcomed all ages. Donations to the Foodbank were encouraged but not necessary. Funds were used to purchase tea, coffee, milk and sugar and towards the purchase of a coffee machine. Cakes were provided free of charge from the Benefice churches in rotation to increase outreach and involvement.
Many fruitful conversations around needing family support and raising funds to assist the Foodbank have been held. The focus of the church in these gatherings has been central for all to understand the historical legacy and the need for a village church. In general numbers attending have grown especially during the better weather with numbers being in the regular 20 to 30 attendees.
The initiative has played a vital role in supporting the wellbeing of the local community and encouraged support for Foodbank families further afield. Any attendance at the coffee mornings has provided an excellent base for the clergy to discuss and promote the Gospel and Christian faith in a friendly and safe environment to people who are not regular church goers. Community engagement has increased, reduced social isolation and raised awareness our church and the foodbank, encouraging use of the building its services and donations.
To church wishes to continue hosting the monthly coffee mornings and to expand outreach to contact individuals in need.
